Several years ago Jennifer McIntosh (La Trobe University), Bruce Smyth (ADSRI) and Margaret Kelaher (University of Melbourne) conducted a study of developmental outcomes for infants and pre-school children in different parenting arrangements (including shared-time). This small study has since attracted considerable attention overseas and in Australia.
Damien Carrick from the ABC’s Law Report recently interviewed Bruce Smyth about why the study has attracted so much attention and why its key findings seem to have been so widely misunderstood and misrepresented. It’s an interesting story about research translation, and the extent to which academics can control how research is used and understood.
